Waiting On Sun And Heat

Wisconsin’s weather is still reluctant to help farmers with spring planting ideas.

The latest update from the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service shows that just one percent of spring tillage has been accomplished, and only one percent of oats are in the ground.

It also appears that winter wheat fields and pastures could use some warm sunshine to help perk them up. State officials estimate that 58% of winter wheat fields are rated good to excellent, which is down 3% points from last week. Pasture conditions were estimated at 37% good to excellent, also down 1% from last week.

There was some improvement in subsoil moisture levels statewide. 18% of fields subsoil moisture was rated short – down about 7% points from last week.
