Wisconsin milk production is up 4.6 percent — more than 2 percentage points above the 24 major states’ average. Western states, such as California, saw a dip in milk production due to heat.
Milk production in Wisconsin during July totaled more than 2.7 billion pounds, up nearly 5 percent from the previous July, according to the latest USDA Milk Production report.
The average number of milk cows during July, at 1.28 million head, was 3,000 more than June and 21,000 more than July 2020. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,130 pounds, up 60 pounds from last July.
Milk production in the 24 major states during July totaled 18.3 billion pounds, up 2.1 percent from last year. Production per cow in these states averaged 2,035 pounds for July, 11 pounds above July 2020. And the number of cows is up from last year in the 24 major states by 136,000 head. Milk cows total 8.99 million. But that figure is 3,000 less than June.
Milk production in the U.S. during July totaled 19.1 billion pounds, up 2 percent from last year. Production per cow averaged 2,015 pounds, 14 pounds above last year. The number of milk cows on farms was 9.50 million head, 128,000 head more than last year, but 3,000 head less than June.
