The Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival is proud to highlight one of its most educational and impactful events for the sheep industry. This being the Pen of 3 Commercial Carcass Evaluation. This unique contest gives producers and the public an inside look at what drives value in today’s commercial lamb market.
In the evaluation, producers bring groups of three market lambs to the festival. The animals are first evaluated live for their market readiness and desirable traits. Following harvest, they are carefully graded to assess yield, quality, and consistency. Results from both the live and carcass evaluations are combined to recognize top-performing entries.
“The Pen of 3 Evaluation connects the dots between what producers raise and what consumers demand,” said Hedge Becker, Festival Coordinator. “It’s an invaluable tool for shepherds to better understand the qualities packers and buyers are seeking, and it provides an opportunity to benchmark their flocks against others in the region.”
This evaluation not only serves commercial producers but also educates fairgoers. Visitors can see firsthand how animal selection decisions translate to quality, lean meat yield, and ultimately, consumer satisfaction.
The Pen of 3 Commercial Carcass Evaluation underscores the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival’s mission. This mission is to support education, marketing, and innovation within the sheep industry. Commercial producers interested in participating are encouraged to enter through the festival’s website at https://wisconsinsheepandwoolfestival.com/education/pen-of-3.
The Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival runs September 5-7, at the Jefferson County Fair Park in Jefferson, WI. With livestock shows, fiber arts, educational workshops, shopping, food, and family-friendly fun, the festival is one of the Midwest’s premier sheep and fiber events.
