Wied Presses Canada On Wildfire Smoke Impact

Rep. Tony Wied sent a letter to Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman requesting swift action to mitigate Canadian wildfires. Wied says this is after years of negative impacts on Northeast Wisconsin and across the state.

“With Canada’s lack of active forest management being the main driver of these fires, I implore you to use all the means at your disposal to both prevent and mitigate wildfires in the future,” Wied wrote.

Last week, Green Bay had the worst air quality in the country due to wayward wildfire smoke. This comes from blazes in central Canada, according to Wied’s office. For the third summer in a row, Canadian wildfires have blanketed Northeastern Wisconsin in smoke. Wied emphasizes that the smoke has disrupted daily life and put Wisconsinites’ health at risk.

He says it’s largely due to Canada’s lack of active forest management. Proper management has been proven to reduce the risk of wildfires.

“It is my hope that this issue can be addressed quickly and collaboratively,” Wied wrote to Hillman. “I look forward to your timely response and hope that you will relay these concerns to the rest of your government.”
