UW-Madison Extension presents farm viability webinar for farm succession professionals

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension is partnering with the Wisconsin Farm Succession Professionals Network (WiFSPN) to present a webinar that will focus on how to help farm clientele evaluate their farm’s long-term viability. The webinar will be offered on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020 from 10 – 11 a.m. using Zoom online software.

Farmers may be “On the Fence” in this current economic climate. “On the Fence” means they are not sure which direction their business should be moving. Should they move forward and push through short-term cash flow issues? Or are they in need of protecting their equity for themselves or future generations? These farmers could benefit from an evaluation of their farm’s long term viability. In this instance, viability is defined as a function of the ability for the farmer/farm family to meet their farm business and family goals/values through capacity, performance, and resiliency.

Agriculture service providers who work with farm clientele on succession planning are invited to the November 24th webinar to learn more about evaluating farm viability and tools to assist their farm clientele. The webinar will be offered at no cost, but registration is required to participate and receive a link to the recording if you are unable to attend the live program. Katie Wantoch, UW-Madison Extension Dunn County Agriculture Educator and Joy Kirkpatrick, UW Center for Dairy Profitability Farm Succession Specialist will facilitate the webinar using materials and concepts developed by Kevin Bernhardt, UW-Platteville Farm Management Professor and Extension Farm Management Specialist.

Wisconsin Farm Succession Professionals Network (WiFSPN) is an organization that was started in 2014 for agriculture service professionals who assist their farming clients with any aspect of farm succession planning. The organization includes attorneys, accountants, farm tax specialists, enrolled tax agents, financial planners, business consultants, and educators. Each fall the organization offers professional development on various farm succession topics. WiFSPN is supported by the UW Center for Dairy Profitability and UW-Madison Division of Extension.

A second WiFSPN webinar will be offered on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 10 – 11 a.m. Information and registration for this January webinar will be shared in the next few weeks.
