Wisconsin had 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending August 25, 2024, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Dry conditions allowed for an increase in fieldwork. Field activities included harvesting small grains, potatoes, and cutting hay.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 3 percent very short, 15 percent short, 74 percent adequate and 8 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 1 percent very short, 12 percent short, 77 percent adequate and
10 percent surplus.
Corn silked reached 95 percent. Corn in the dough stage reached 73 percent, matching last year but 2 days ahead of the 5-year average. Twenty-five percent of corn has reached the dent stage. Corn condition was rated 65 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week.
Ninety-seven percent of the soybean crop was blooming with 90 percent setting pods, 4 days ahead of both last year and average. Soybeans have just begun turning color. Soybean condition was rated 63 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week.
Oats were 86 percent harvested, 6 days ahead of last year and 7 days ahead of average.
The third cutting of alfalfa hay was 89 percent complete, and fourth cutting was 20 percent complete. All hay condition was rated 75 percent good to excellent, down 2 percentage points from last week.
Potato harvest was 25 percent complete. Potato condition was 90 percent good to excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 57 percent good to excellent, down 3 percentage points from last week
