Tree Farms Harvest The Christmas Spirit

Cold temperatures and a dusting of snow are ideal for a Christmas tree producer. Jacob Eugster at Eugster’s Farm Market in Stoughton says most of his 3,000 trees are ready to be harvested. They stand up to 10 feet high.

He tells Mid-West Farm Report all about growing these festive evergreens. First, he says cold temperatures keep the evergreens dormant, which means that they’ll stay green longer after they’re harvested. A dusting of snow helps set the mood for visitors seeking out their perfect Christmas tree.

Harvest Tips

Whether it’s a longstanding tradition or a new activity for your family, Eugster has reminders to make the harvest easier.

Typically, he says the farm will provide a hand saw.

“A handful of people have been getting wise and bringing electric saws, which is quite a professional tip,” Eugster says.

The farm will shake the tree to make sure there are no critters or loose needles that come home with you. Then, they’ll bale the tree before you load it on the roof of your car. It’s ideal to come with a car or truck that has a roof rack. He says vans are best so you can put the whole tree inside the vehicle.

Keeping The Tree Evergreen

Once you have the tree at the house, the most important thing is to water it and check the water every day.

“When I check our trees at home, some days they won’t drink any water and then the next day, the whole bowl will be gone,” Eugster says.

Indoor temperatures matter, too. The warmer the house, the more water the tree will drink as it tries to reawaken. If it’s really cold outside, he says some of his customers try to acclimate their tree by putting it in the garage for a few days before the warm living room.
