The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds ice anglers to remove their permanent ice shanties before deadlines. Ice shanties that are not removed daily must be off the ice by the following dates:
- March 1 – Wisconsin-Minnesota boundary waters
- March 2 – Inland waters south of Highway 64
- March 15 – Wisconsin-Michigan boundary waters
- March 16 – Lake Michigan, Green Bay, Lake Superior, and inland waters north of Highway 64
Portable shanties may still be used after these dates but must be removed when not in use. Anglers can find removal details in the Guide to Wisconsin’s 2024-2025 Hook and Line Fishing Regulations.
Anyone needing help should contact local fishing clubs, vendors, or other anglers. No ice is completely safe. Anglers should check ice conditions with local fishing clubs or bait shops before removing shanties.
