The team at Golden Sands Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc. (Golden Sands RC&D) is working with PartnersHP (formerly the Hunger and Poverty Prevention Partnership of Portage County) to host a family friendly grand opening event at the new Giving Farm, held on Saturday, July 12th, from
12:30-3:30pm.
The event will include a variety of activities for all ages and free kids games. Activities will be related
to gardening, invasive species, seed starting, and identifying parts of a plant. There will also be
exhibitor and informational booths about mulch, compost, soils, and native plantings. Lastly, there will
be demonstrations such as how to use a broadfork, compost at home, and methods of mulching.
The vision for the Giving Farm was developed by PartnersHP and people engaged in the Giving Gardens program. Further development and implementation of the idea stems from a collaboration between Golden Sands RC&D and PartnersHP. Continued work establishing the Giving Farm is possible thanks in part to the Visionary Grant awarded by the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin, and a parcel of public land made available by the City of Stevens Point, as facilitated by Mayor Mike Wiza and Public Utilities Director, Joel Lemke.
