Wisconsin experienced cooler weather just before the Memorial Weekend break, with some of the state at least 4 degrees below normal. Frost damage is possible in several areas. Most of Wisconsin remained short on moisture, but scattered storms dropped larger amounts in some areas. An area in Wood and Portage counties received over 2 inches of rain. Some of the storms were severe, with hail in some counties in the north, and snow reported in the west. According to the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service, as of Sunday, planting was close to finishing for most crops though the late frost may cause some replanting.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 2% very short, 14% short, 74% adequate and 10% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 5% very short, 14% short, 73% adequate and 8% surplus.
Corn is reported 95% planted. Seventy-seven percent of corn had emerged, 3 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated 81% good to excellent.
Soybeans are reported 91% planted, 4 days ahead of last year and 15 days ahead of the average. Soybeans are reported 63% emerged, 5 days ahead of last year and 11 days ahead of the average.
Oats are reported 98% planted. Ninety-one percent of oats are emerged, 3 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of the average. Thirteen percent of oats are headed, 10 days ahead of last year and 12 days ahead of the average. Oat condition is rated 84% good to excellent, 4 percentage points better than last week.
Potatoes are 98% planted. Potato condition is rated 91% good to excellent.Winter wheat is reported 34% headed, 9 days ahead of last year, and 7 days ahead of the average. Winter wheat condition was rated 90% good to excellent statewide, 3 percentage points above last week.
The first cutting of alfalfa hay is reported 27% complete, 4 days ahead of last year, and 1 day ahead of the average. All hay condition was rated 72% good to excellent, 3 percentage points above last week.
Pasture condition was rated 73% good to excellent, 8 percentage points above last week.
