The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages everyone to start the new year outdoors. Join one of many First Day Hikes planned across state properties on New Year’s Day.
First Day Hikes offer a healthy and refreshing way to welcome the new year. “Starting the year in nature refreshes both body and mind,” said Steve Schmelzer, DNR Parks and Recreation Management Director. “It’s also a perfect way to celebrate 125 years of the Wisconsin State Park System.”
Keystone Celebration at Mirror Lake State Park
Mirror Lake State Park in Baraboo will host a special anniversary hike. Meet at the boat launch parking lot at 11 a.m. for a brief program, followed by a 1.5-mile guided hike. The hike covers the Echo Rock and Cliffwood Coulee trails.
The Echo Rock Trail is a 0.3-mile paved path leading to a scenic overlook. From there, attendees can return to the parking lot or continue on the Cliffwood Coulee Trail. Warm refreshments and a fire will keep participants cozy.
Options for Every Hiker
First Day Hikes are great for beginners, offering a set start time and gathering spot. Experienced hikers are welcome to share tips and foster community. Some hikes are pet-free, so check with the property before bringing pets.
Self-guided hikes let visitors explore at their own pace. Choose easy nature trails or more challenging routes. Maps and recommendations are often available from property staff.
Dress warmly in layers, and wear hats, gloves, and insulated boots. Many properties will also provide bonfires or warming shelters.
More Than Just Hiking
Several events include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other winter activities. Contact the property for snowshoe rentals or outdoor wheelchair reservations. Some trails are universally accessible, but confirm conditions in advance.
Admission Details
First Day Hikes are free, but vehicle or state trail passes may be required. Free daily admission passes may be available at participating libraries.
For event details, visit the DNR Events Calendar. Note that hikes may be canceled due to bad weather.
Even if no First Day Hike is nearby, Wisconsin’s parks, forests, and trails remain open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
First Day Hikes, an initiative of the National Association of State Park Directors, inspire people to enjoy active outdoor recreation on New Year’s Day.
