State’s Egg Output Drops 5% in September

Wisconsin egg production during September 2020 was 182 million eggs, down 5% from last month but up 2% from last year, according to the latest Chickens and Eggs report from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The average number of all layers on hand during September 2020 was 7.62 million, down 1% from last month but up 7% from last year. Eggs per 100 layers for September were 2,384, down 5% from last month and down 4% from last year.

U.S. Egg Production

United States egg production totaled 9.03 billion during September 2020, down 2% from last year. Production included 7.81 billion table eggs, and 1.22 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.14 billion were broiler-type and
81.0 million were egg-type.

The average number of layers during September 2020 totaled 384 million, down 3% from last year. September egg production per 100 layers was 2,354 eggs, up 1% from September 2019.

Total layers in the United States on October 1, 2020 totaled 385 million, down 3% from last year. The 385 million layers consisted of 321 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 60.8 million layers producing broilertype hatching eggs, and 3.12 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on October 1, 2020, averaged 78.9 eggs per 100 layers, up 2% from October 1, 2019.

Egg-type chicks hatched during September 2020 totaled 49.9 million, down 1% from September 2019. Eggs in incubators totaled 46.6 million on October 1, 2020, down 4% from a year ago. Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled
189,000 during September 2020, down 34% from September 2019.

Broiler-type chicks hatched during September 2020 totaled 810 million, down 1% from September 2019. Eggs in incubators totaled 667 million on October 1, 2020, down 1% from a year ago.
