Spring 2025 Seedling Orders Open

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is now accepting seedling orders from Wisconsin landowners for spring 2025 tree and shrub plantings. These high-quality, native species are grown at the F.G. Wilson State Nursery in Boscobel and are suitable for planting statewide.

State nurseries provide seedlings for reforestation and conservation on private, public, and tribal lands. These plantings offer benefits such as wildlife habitat, soil erosion control, carbon storage, aesthetics, and shade. They also help Wisconsin reach its goal of planting 100 million trees by 2030, as part of the national Trillion Tree Pledge.

A minimum order includes 300 trees or shrubs in increments of 100 per species, 500 shrubs, or 1,000 tree seedlings. Youth groups and educational organizations may also order for their projects.

Conifer species available this year include white cedar, balsam fir, eastern hemlock, jack, red, and white pine, black and white spruce, and tamarack. Hardwood species include aspen, basswood, river, white, and yellow birch, butternut, black cherry, American elm, hackberry, hickory, silver and sugar maple, bur, red, southern pin, swamp white and white oak, sycamore, and black walnut. Shrub species include buttonbush, highbush cranberry, gray, red-osier, and silky dogwood, hawthorn, American hazelnut, Juneberry, ninebark, and American plum.

Due to limited supplies and high demand, the DNR encourages early orders. Please list a preferred replacement species or age class in case your choice is unavailable. Refer to the DNR’s stock descriptions for seedling size and characteristics before ordering.

For personalized assistance, customers can contact reforestation staff or a local DNR forester for advice or a planting plan. Printed order forms are available through local foresters or nurseries. The DNR processes orders daily at random, regardless of the method (online, fax, mail), to ensure fairness for all customers. Phone orders will not be accepted until Oct. 21, 2024, due to expected high demand and staff limitations.

To place an order, visit the DNR website and use the online form or mail a printed form to:
