Sheep Inventory Down; Milk Goats Unchanged

All sheep and lambs inventory in Wisconsin as of Jan. 1 totaled 78,000 head, down 2,000 head from 2023, according to the latest National Agricultural Statistics Service Sheep and Goats Report.

Total breeding stock, at 64,000 head, was 2 percent below one year ago. Market sheep and lambs decreased 7 percent from a year ago and totaled 14,000 head. The 2023 lamb crop was estimated at
57,000 head, down 2 percent from the 2022 lamb crop.

Wool production for 2023 was 315,000 pounds, up 5 percent from 2022, with fleece weights averaging
6.6 pounds.

Milk goat inventory in Wisconsin as of Jan. 1 was 74,000 head. This was unchanged from January 2023.
