Cause of Death
Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer, according to a statement from her representatives. She died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones. Her representatives did not disclose the specific type of cancer.
Parton had spoken publicly in recent months about ongoing health challenges, while continuing to work on her music, business ventures, and philanthropic efforts.
Family Life
Dolly Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, and grew up in a large, close-knit family in the Great Smoky Mountains. She was the fourth of 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Parton.
The Parton family had very little money, but music was a major part of their lives. Dolly grew up singing in church and performing with her siblings, developing the love of music that would eventually shape her extraordinary career.
Her upbringing in the Smoky Mountains had a lasting influence on her songwriting and storytelling. Songs such as “Coat of Many Colors” drew directly from her childhood experiences and the lessons she learned from her family.
Dolly married Carl Thomas Dean in 1966. The couple remained together for decades, maintaining a famously private relationship away from the spotlight.
Country Music Career
Dolly began performing professionally as a child and moved to Nashville shortly after graduating high school. Her songwriting talent quickly caught the attention of the country music industry.

Dolly Parton’s SongTeller Hotel & Life of Many Colors Museum
Dolly Parton’s legacy will continue to welcome fans in Nashville with the opening of Dolly Parton’s SongTeller Hotel and Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum on September 29 in downtown Nashville. The projects were already in motion before Parton’s passing and will move forward as a lasting celebration of her extraordinary life and career.
The 245-room hotel, developed in partnership with Herschend, features two live entertainment venues: Jolene’s, located on the top floor, and Parton’s Live, on the second floor. The hotel will offer fans another way to experience the music, storytelling and spirit that made Dolly an enduring country music icon.
Taking up the hotel’s entire third floor, Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum will guide visitors through Parton’s remarkable journey. The museum will feature video content Dolly recorded earlier this year, along with items from her personal collection, offering an intimate look at the woman behind the legend.
The entertainment venues will also keep Dolly’s commitment to supporting music and artists alive, with performances planned from family members and other artists, including a twice-weekly artist-in-residence series featuring her niece, Jada Star.
