Recent Rains Slowed Planting

Planting progress was slowed as wet conditions continued throughout most of Wisconsin, according to USDA’s latest crop progress report.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 1 percent very short, 8 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service says the rain was overall beneficial to wheat and alfalfa. Winter wheat condition was rated 85 percent good to excellent statewide. All hay conditions remained rated at 74 percent good to excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated 59 percent good to excellent statewide, up 4 percent from last week.

As conditions allowed, farmers get to field activities such as tillage, planting, and fertilizer application. There were some scattered reports of hay cutting.

Corn planting was 40 percent complete, three days ahead of last year and a day ahead of the 5-year average. Corn emergence was 8 percent complete.

Soybean planting was 37 percent complete, five days ahead of last year and four days ahead of average. Soybean emergence was 6 percent complete.

Oat planting progress was 68 percent complete, six days ahead of last year and three days ahead of average. Oat emergence was 38 percent complete.

Eighty percent of potato acreage has been planted, eight days ahead of last year and six days ahead of average.

Spring tillage was 71 percent complete, six days ahead of last year and three days ahead of average.
