At the annual Professional Dairy Producers Business Conference, one Wisconsin farmer is stepping onto the stage to tackle a looming challenge: the disappearance of BMR corn.
Tom Zwald, who operates Bomaz Farms in Hammond with his family, will join a featured panel to discuss the industry-wide transition away from brown midrib corn genetics. Many dairies have historically relied on BMR for its high digestibility.
Having milked 1,400 Holsteins and managed the transition to conventional corn over six years ago, Zwald argues that the shift doesn’t have to hurt the bottom line.
“I felt that we could see the same response from the cows if we properly managed our corn and did not have any of the agronomic impacts that BMR is typically associated with,” he explains.
Beyond the technical aspects of forage, Zwald emphasizes that the value of the conference lies in the connections made between sessions. A veteran attendee of 15 years, he views the event as a catalyst for practical change on the farm.
“You never know what spark might set something off that intrigues you to try something different or change a practice,” he says.
The panel will take place March 4. It will offer strategies for farms of all sizes to maintain high-quality feed in an evolving market.
