Nurseries Needed: Join the 2025 Box Tree Moth Watch

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is asking for help from local nurseries to find an invasive pest: the box tree moth.

This pest, known scientifically as Cydalima perspectalis, is a serious threat to boxwood plants, which are popular in landscaping and garden centers.

The box tree moth is new to the U.S. but has spread fast since it was first found in Canada in 2018. So far, this pest has been found in states including Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. While Wisconsin has not seen it yet, experts say now is the time to be proactive.

Starting in June 2025, DATCP’s Pest Survey Program will run a detection survey to search for the box tree moth. To do this, they are looking for 10 Wisconsin nurseries that grow or import boxwoods to take part.

Nurseries that join will allow a field technician to place two green bucket traps near boxwood plants or holding areas. The traps contain a special lure that attracts male box tree moths.

DATCP will monitor the traps and test any samples. If the moth is found, the nursery will be notified. Otherwise, nursery names and locations will be kept private.

This survey will help protect both the landscape industry and homeowners who enjoy boxwood plants.

Nursery growers and dealers who want to participate should email Krista Hamilton at krista.hamilton@wisconsin.gov by May 9.
