Dairy farms have long relied on sand bedding for their cows, and for good reason. Sand bedding provides crucial comfort and traction for dairy cows, especially as they move in and out of stalls. According to Renee Schrift, Global Director of Sales for Agricultural Systems at McLanahan Corporation, “Sand allows the cows to get in and out of the stall and gives them traction and cushion.”
The right bedding also plays a key role in keeping cows clean and dry, which is important for their health and productivity. “Sand bedding is the golden standard for cow comfort,” said Schrift. “It offers excellent drainage, which helps keep the cow’s udder dry and free from bacteria.”
When selecting sand for bedding, farmers must consider its grade. Sand that is too fine can become compacted and hard, almost like concrete. “Fine sand retains moisture and can trap organic matter, making the stall uncomfortable and difficult to clean,” explained Schrift. “On the other hand, coarse sand with a mix of particle sizes drains better and maintains its effectiveness over time.”
For farmers, the ability to reclaim sand from manure is another important factor. “Knowing the type of sand you’re using is crucial for reclamation,” said Schrift. “Sand with good settling characteristics will allow for better separation and reduce the time and cost involved in cleaning.”
The importance of sand bedding for cow comfort, udder health, and farm management is clear. As Schrift noted, “Farmers who use sand bedding see benefits in herd management, including lower somatic cell counts and increased cow comfort. It’s a win for both the cows and the farm.”
