Lawmakers Want To Know Tariff Impact

U.S. Sens. Tammy Baldwin, Amy Klobuchar, and 17 colleagues are asking the Trump administration for information on how tariff policy impacts farmers nationwide.

“We write with great concern about the impact of the Administration’s reckless tariff agenda on our nation’s farmers,” the legislators wrote to U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer.

Farmers have billions of dollars in commodities from last year waiting to be sold, and have also started spring planting, requiring stable markets for their planning. The Economic Research Service within the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that in Trump’s first term, tariffs cost American farmers $27 billion in exports over two years.

“As farm organizations and economists have been warning for months, key trading partners will continue to retaliate against U.S. agricultural products as a result of President Trump’s tariffs,” the lawmakers continued in the letter. “The direct economic impact and uncertainty on America’s farmers stands to change the future of agricultural trade relationships for generations.”
