Lamb
The fed lamb market was firm again last week. The net carcass value was $488.01 last Friday compared to $491.40 the week before. The estimated harvest total of 28,000 was 8,000 fewer than the previous week and 5,000 fewer than last year.
Larger shipments to Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, and Costa Rica pushed July exports of U.S. lamb muscle cuts to 239 metric tons. This is up 56% from a year ago. Imports of lamb to the U.S. had decreased during the first half of the year due to tariffs imposed on New Zealand and Australian lamb. Imports were higher during July and August, however, with much of the lamb coming from Chile, Uruguay, and Canada. About 70% of the lamb consumed in the U.S. is imported. New crop lambs were mixed selling from $175-$220/cwt.
