Heads Up, Trail Users: Trail Closing for the State Fair

The Wisconsin DNR and Wisconsin State Fair Park officials just announced they will close the Hank Aaron State Trail between S. 76th St. and S. 84th St. from Aug. 6 to Aug. 16 to keep everyone safe during the 2026 Wisconsin State Fair.

What’s Happening?

The east-west trail cuts right through State Fair Park. It passes north of W. Schlinger Ave. on the west side, Fifth Street inside the park, and W. Pierce St. on the east side. To keep this area secure, State Fair Park Management and Police have worked hard over the last few years. They added metal detectors at all entrances, put up better fencing, limited bag sizes, and updated the gates.

Why the Temporary Closure?

“We understand this closure causes challenges for trail users. We’ve consulted with public safety officials and believe this is a necessary security measure that will help to ensure the safety of our fairgoers, exhibitors, vendors, operators and staff,” said John Yingling, Chairman of the Wisconsin State Fair Park Board of Directors.

How to Get Around It

Don’t worry about getting around, though. Officials have already set up detour routes in both directions. Plus, crew members will put up signs along the trail before the closure starts at 8 a.m. on Aug. 6 to show you exactly where to go. You can also get more details on the Wisconsin State Fair website.
