Wisconsin farmers have been working to harvest third-crop alfalfa and bring new potatoes to market.
USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service says the third cutting of alfalfa was 97% finished as of Sunday. Ninety percent of the state’s oats are also in the bin.
Corn development is ahead of schedule, with 85% now in the dough stage compared to the five-year average of 80%. Five percent of Wisconsin’s corn is mature, and the corn silage harvest has begun with 5% of the silage in the bunk. Sixty-two percent of the corn is rated good to excellent, down three percent from a week ago. The southwest and south-central parts of the state have the most corn in the dough stage, with both above 90%.
Ninety-six percent of Wisconsin’s soybeans are setting pods, which is three percent more than the five-year average. Overall condition fell two points, with 61% reported as good to excellent.
With only scattered showers and six days suitable for field work last week, many areas could use rain. Fifty-six percent of Wisconsin’s topsoil has adequate moisture, and only one percent of fields have surplus moisture.
