With harvest just around the corner, Midwest farmers are turning a hopeful eye to the fields. According to Jacob Getz, a certified crop specialist with Insight FS in the Madison area, this year’s corn and soybean crops are shaping up to be some of the best in recent memory.
“Generally speaking, we’ve got a really good corn crop,” Getz shared. “Things are progressing well.”
Timely rains, minimal pest pressure, and smooth planting conditions have all played a role in setting up a successful growing season. Getz notes that while certain diseases, such as southern rust, northern corn leaf blight, and tar spot, have made appearances in some fields, overall crop health remains strong.
“Timely rains have been huge,” he said. “We haven’t had a lot of pest issues — whether it’s rootworm or Japanese beetles. Those numbers have been low in a lot of the areas that I cover.”
Still, Getz emphasizes that vigilance is key this late in the season. Disease pressure, particularly from tar spot, can pose threats to stalk strength and yield potential if left unmanaged. Fungicide applications may still be worthwhile depending on the severity and growth stage of the crop.
“If we see significant amounts of the pathogen on the leaves, especially above the ear leaf, that’s a cause for concern,” he explained. “We want to keep that plant as healthy as possible, as long as possible.”
Soybeans are also looking strong across much of southern Wisconsin. While a few pockets of white mold have been reported, the crop is standing well and continuing to develop. A couple more timely rains could seal the deal for an excellent harvest.
Looking ahead, Getz advises growers to pay close attention to soil fertility going into next season. Proper nutrient levels are the foundation for crop success — especially in a tight commodity market where every bushel counts.
“Don’t cut corners to think you can save a few bucks and then have it cost you 40 bushels at the end of the day,” Getz said.
