Freeze Doesn’t Hamper Fall Activity

The latest crop progress report from the USDA says temps continue to be above normal statewide. Northern areas had their first hard freeze of the year. But normal fall field activities continue with corn, soybean and potato harvest, as well as fall tillage and manure application.

Nearly 50 percent of corn for grain was harvested, five days ahead of last year and 11 days ahead of the five-year average. Moisture content was reported at 20 percent. Corn condition was 72 percent good to excellent, 4 percentage points above last week.

Soybean harvest is three-fourths of the way through, five days behind last year but almost a week ahead of the average.

Winter wheat planting reached 93 percent complete. Nearly three-quarters of winter wheat has emerged, four days
ahead of last year and 11 days ahead of normal.

Pasture condition rated 71 percent good to excellent, 1 percentage point above the previous week. Fall tillage was 44 percent complete, three days ahead of last year and 13 days ahead of the five-year average.

And potato harvest was 99 percent complete.
