As geopolitical tensions escalate into open conflict between Israel, the U.S., and Iran, the ripple effects are being felt far beyond the front lines. With the critical Strait of Hormuz currently closed to shipping, Wisconsin farmers are facing rising energy costs and uncertain supply chains just ahead of spring planting.
The closure of the Strait, which handles up to 30 percent of global oil exports, has sent crude oil prices soaring. This spike is driving up the cost of fuel and petroleum-based fertilizers while simultaneously providing a temporary, but unstable, boost to grain prices.
John Heinberg, a market advisor with Total Farm Marketing, warns that while the “risk premium” has added value to corn, soybean, and wheat crops, the window of opportunity for producers is precarious.
“Typically, when we get markets like these, these are opportunities for producers to get some sales in, build some defense underneath their prices and protect themselves,” Heinberg told Mid-West Farm Report. “I’m really stressing with my guys right now is these things can go away very quickly. All we need is a ceasefire… and you’re going to see things reflected across the commodity space in general.”
Fertilizer, already hovering at historically high price points, faces new threats from both production costs and transportation bottlenecks. Heinberg urged farmers to be proactive in securing their inputs as the planting season approaches.
The conflict is also shifting the global wheat market, as end-users scramble to secure supplies in a region that is a major hub for wheat exports.
“We’ve got a market now that trades off of headlines,” Heinberg noted. “If there’s even a whisper… that the Strait of Hormuz could be opening for a little while, you just saw crude oil come down two dollars off its highs.”
