The Wisconsin Farm Bureau is commending the state Assembly’s passage of three bills.
Assembly Bills 73 and 74 would prohibit the labeling of food as milk or as a dairy product or ingredient if the food is not derived from the milk of a cow or other hooved mammal. AB75 would prohibit the labeling of food as meat if the food is not derived from the flesh of an animal, fish, mollusk or insect.
“Farmers and processors have worked for generations to establish the reputation Wisconsin products have in the marketplace today,” said WFBF President Kevin Krentz. “These bills provide greater transparency and clarity for consumers while accurately labeling our wholesome products.”
These bills also align with existing but currently unenforced FDA regulations. The implementation of these labeling provisions will go into effect once other states adopt similar food labeling legislation.
“These bills not only protect consumers but also Wisconsin’s $46 billion dairy industry,” Krentz added. “It is encouraging to see strong bipartisan support on such important topics.”
The bills now move to the state Senate for consideration.
