Duane Ducat of Deer Run Dairy was honored with the Dairy Business Association’s second annual Community Outreach Award. This award, presented in collaboration with Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, recognizes farmers who actively engage with their community and promote the positive messages of dairy farming.
“I’m honored to accept this award, and thank you to all of you,” Ducat said. “I’m passionate about sustainability and best management practices, but it’s a team effort. Peninsula Pride Farms has been fantastic, and together we’re making a difference in sustainability.”
Ducat farms in Kewaunee, Wis., with partners Derek Ducat and Dale Bogart. They prioritize sustainability for the benefit of their community, farm, and future generations. As the founding member and current president of Peninsula Pride Farms, a farmer-led watershed conservation group, Ducat works to improve the environment and protect natural resources. He is also active in Farmers for Sustainable Food and participates in several data-driven sustainability projects.
At Deer Run Dairy, the team uses sustainable practices like cover cropping and no-tillage. In 2011, they installed an anaerobic digester to produce natural gas, which powers hundreds of local homes. The manure solids from the digester are used for bedding for the cows. The farm is a leader in implementing conservation practices and serves as mentors to others interested in learning.
“Duane fully deserves this award for his community involvement and for sharing the story of his farm,” said Tim Trotter, DBA CEO. “His passion for promoting conservation and engaging with his community is outstanding.”
Deer Run Dairy regularly hosts farm tours for local community members and government officials. Ducat enjoys connecting with others and sharing his love for agriculture with those eager to learn.
