Dry Weather Continues To Affect Crop Progress

Rain in Northern portions of the state helped relieve some drought conditions. However, most of the state remained dry, further worsening crop conditions. The Crop Progress and Condition report released by the USDA shares details on how things are looking.

Corn condition is rated 50 percent good to excellent, down 4 percent from last week. Eighteen percent of corn silage is off the ground, that’s 6 days ahead of last year and 1 day ahead of average. About 16 percent of the corn crop is mature. Meanwhile, corn in the dough stage or beyond was 92 percent. Sixty-six percent of the corn had reached the dent state, 1 day ahead of the average.

Soybean condition was 47 percent good to excellent, down 8 percentage points from last week. Soybeans coloring was 45 percent, 1 day behind the average.

The third cutting of alfalfa was reported at 97 percent complete while the fourth cutting of alfalfa was 69 percent complete. This is 8 days ahead of the average. Oats harvested for grain was at 95 percent. Potatoes harvested was at 42 percent, 4 days ahead of the average. Eighteen percent of the winter wheat crop has been planted. That’s 6 days ahead of last year and 2 days ahead of average.

Finally, pasture condition was rated 22 good to excellent, down 6 percentage points from last week.
