Dry weather allowed for good progress on many field activities, including harvesting corn silage, cutting hay, seeding winter wheat and manure application. The Crop Progress and Condition report released by the USDA shares details on how things are looking.
Corn condition was 63 percent good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from last week. Twenty-three percent of corn silage is off the ground. That’s 3 days behind last year and 2 days behind average. Eighteen percent of the corn crop was mature. Meanwhile, corn in the dough stage reached 94 percent. Seventy-three percent of corn has reached the dent stage, 2 days behind last year but 1 day ahead of the 5-year average.
Soybean condition remained at 62 percent good to excellent. Soybeans coloring reached 75 percent, 4 days ahead of last year and the average.
The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay was 63 percent complete. Winter wheat planting was 23 percent complete with 8 percent emerged.
