Hog prices have been 18% higher on average through the summer compared to last year. Prices normally increase this time of year and then work lower beginning in October. Pork production in July was 4% lower than last year with harvest also down 4%. The average live weight of 282 was one pound lower than July 2024. The hot summer slowed gains and impacted supply somewhat. The weather likely played only a small factor in the lower production, however. Disease challenges are still impacting herds. While the June Hogs and Pigs report implied summer harvest would be unchanged from a year ago, it has been 3% lower since the beginning of June. The pork cutout averaged $113.45 last week, making it $2.92 lower. Early week activity helped erase some of the loss. The estimated weekly harvest total was 2.419 million, 11,000 more than a year ago, but 88,000 fewer than the same week last year.
