Dairy economist Bozic joins Edge board as adviser

Marin Bozic, one of the leading dairy economists in the country, has joined Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative’s board of directors as an adviser, the cooperative announced today.

Dr. Bozic is an assistant professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota. His study areas include analysis of dairy policy, risk management and demand for dairy products. Bozic is also a co-creator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Dairy Revenue Protection.

Bozic will help the Edge board consider the effects of the various complex issues affecting farmers and processors as the co-op forms its federal advocacy positions, Edge President Brody Stapel said.

“This will be particularly important as Congress begins to shape the 2023 farm bill during the next year,” Stapel said. “We want to make sure we are seeing the full picture so that we can push for the most effective policies in Washington.”

Stapel also pointed to the importance of Bozic’s deep understanding of the complicated Federal Milk Marketing Orders and milk pricing system. Many dairy farmers have felt the direct effect of negative producer price differentials during the pandemic over the past year.

“Having someone of Dr. Bozic’s caliber at the table will only strengthen our ability as a leading dairy policy organization,” Stapel said. “We are excited to have him join us in our mission.”

Bozic said he is humbled to be able to provide unbiased counsel that will help the Edge board understand the impact of dairy policy on members’ farms and communities.

“As a dairy economist, with every project I engage in, I always ask the same question — how will this affect U.S. dairy producers,” Bozic said. “Whether it is Federal Milk Marketing Order reform, USDA food safety programs, standards of identity or innovations in dairy risk management, I believe dairy producers deserve a seat at the table.”
