Conservation for Every Farm

Since its founding in Minnesota in 1982, Pheasants Forever has grown into a nationwide leader in promoting habitat conservation for wildlife. The organization now boasts over 600 employees across the United States, working through its two branches: Pheasants Forever in the northern states and Quail Forever in the southern states.

“Pheasants Forever is more than just about pheasants,” says Anna Karels, Precision Ag and Conservation Specialist for Pheasants Forever. “We’re here to support farmers, landowners, and wildlife by balancing conservation with agricultural productivity.”

Data-Driven Solutions for Conservation and Profit

Precision agriculture is at the heart of Pheasants Forever’s efforts. Specialists like Karels help farmers analyze yield data to identify unproductive or “red acres” that cost more to farm than they generate in revenue.

“We use multiple years of accurate yield data to pinpoint problem areas,” Karels explains. “It’s amazing to see how turning those areas into grasslands or buffer strips can transform them from losses to assets.”

The organization provides recommendations tailored to each farm, from cover crops to reduced tillage and conservation easements. By working closely with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and local agencies, Pheasants Forever ensures farmers access cost-share programs like CRP, CSP, and EQIP.

“There are so many funding opportunities available,” Karels adds. “We help farmers navigate these programs and secure the resources they need.”

Expanding Conservation Beyond Farms

While the organization is rooted in farming, its mission extends beyond traditional agricultural landscapes. Urban and suburban landowners can also implement pollinator plots and other habitat improvements, with support from Pheasants Forever.

“Conservation isn’t just for farmers,” says Karels. “Even if you have a large yard or unused acreage, we can help you create wildlife-friendly spaces.”

Encouraging Farmers to Take the First Step

Pheasants Forever encourages every farm to undergo a conservation analysis, emphasizing that conservation can coexist with farming.

“Every farm has room for conservation,” Karels notes. “Whether it’s a single field or the entire operation, we’re here to help make it more profitable and sustainable.”
