For all those who work at Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Co., ice cream day is every day.
That’s according to Ken Norton who works as the director of retail operations, overseeing all nine locations and their production facility in Madison.
The company started in 1962 as a chocolate and ice cream shop. Shortly after, Chuck Deadman Sr. and his wife switched to selling just ice cream.
“But he’s in the plant every single day, even on the weekends, to make sure the thermostat is set,“ Norton says of Deadman Sr.’s involvement. Now, their sons, Chuck Jr. and Dave Deadman, run the company. Keeping the family-owned feel is a priority as Chocolate Shoppe employs multiple generations from the same families.
Chocolate Shoppe is well known for its popular flavors and very unique names.
“It’s a large group of people that are sitting around in the R&D room talking about what we’re going to come up with for this one, and what are we going to do to make this flavor stand out a little more,” Norton tells Mid-West Farm Report.
Every year, Chocolate Shoppe runs a creative flavor contest where customers can put their own twist on a new flavor. This is where iconic flavors, such as “This $&@! Just got Serious” and “Kitty Kitty Bang Bang,” stemmed from. Last year’s winner was “Apple Cider Donut,” now available in stores.
This flavor, along with multiple others, will be the feature at Chocolate Shoppe’s second annual Cone Crawl on National Ice Cream Day, July 20. Participants will have the opportunity to visit all nine locations and try featured ice cream flavors. Once you try them all, you could win prizes!
