Cast a Line Without a License

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites everyone to Free Fishing Weekend, January 18-19, 2025. This event offers a chance for anglers of all ages to fish Wisconsin waters without needing a fishing license, trout stamp, or salmon stamp.

During the weekend, all 2024-2025 Hook and Line regulations remain in effect, including bag limits, size limits, and species restrictions. While most trout streams are open for catch-and-release fishing, some trout streams, spring ponds, and lakes are closed. Anglers must use artificial lures on open trout streams and release all trout caught. For specific waters, review trout regulations or contact a local biologist.

If you plan to keep your catch, check the DNR’s Safe Eating Guidelines for potential consumption advisories in some areas.

Stay Safe on the Ice

Ice safety is crucial for any winter fishing trip, as no ice is ever completely safe. Dress warmly and bring safety gear, including:

  • Warm, water-resistant layers
  • Sturdy waterproof boots with spike-style creepers
  • Extra hats and gloves
  • Rescue throw rope and ice claws

While the DNR does not monitor ice conditions, local bait shops and fishing clubs can provide updates and tips.

No Gear? No Problem!

The DNR offers loaner ice fishing equipment at 19 tackle loaner sites across the state. Locations with ice fishing gear are marked with an “IF” next to their name. While augers are not provided, anglers can reopen abandoned holes using a sledgehammer or spud bar.

Availability and hours vary, so contact the loaner site ahead of time to plan your fishing adventure.
