Bring the Farm to Your Classroom

Why settle for a typical classroom pet when you can adopt a cow for free? Say goodbye to the guinea pig and hello to a 100-pound dairy calf as your new classroom mascot through the Adopt-A-Cow program.

Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and Discover Dairy are thrilled to announce the return of the Adopt-A-Cow program. This engaging initiative offers classrooms the chance to “adopt” a cow from three participating farms. Best of all, it’s completely free.

The program runs from October to May. During this time, students receive monthly updates about their adopted cow. These updates include photos, stories, and also videos.

Schools, daycare centers, preschools, as well as other educational organizations interested in participating can sign up by September 15.

“Adopt-A-Cow is designed to immerse students in the world of dairy farming,” said Erika Schade, Community and Schools Manager for Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. “Throughout the year, students will learn about the care and growth of their cow, connecting their experiences with core curriculum subjects like science, math, and social studies.”

This year, the program features two returning farms and one new addition. Vision Aire Farms in El Dorado and Orthridge Jerseys in Lancaster will continue as hosts. Schleis Farm of Kewaunee joins as a new host. These farms send updates and also offer student visits. If a visit isn’t possible, students can also join live chats with farmers.

The Adopt-A-Cow program is particularly impactful for urban students who may have limited exposure to agriculture. “About a third of our participants come from urban settings,” Schade said. “For many of these students, this program is their first real encounter with dairy farming. It’s such a unique way to bring the world of dairy farming into the classroom.”
