Badger Pulling Team Scores High At International Competition

The UW-Madison Badger Pulling Team had an impressive performance at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers International Quarter-Scale Student Design Competition a few weeks ago.

Competing against 23 other university teams from across the United States and Canada, the Badger Pulling Team secured 6th place overall. They also took home three prestigious awards: the Maneuverability Award, the Safety Award, and the Best Appearance Award.

The ASABE International Quarter Scale Student Design Competition challenges students to design, build, and test a 1/4 scale pulling tractor, pushing the boundaries of machinery engineering and innovation. Teams are judged on various aspects, including design, performance, maneuverability, safety, and written and oral reports.

“We are incredibly proud of the Badger Pulling Team’s dedication and success at this year’s
competition,” says Prof. Brian Luck, Badger Pulling co-advisor in the Biological Systems Engineering Department. “Their 6th place overall finish against such strong international competition is a testament to their hard work, ingenuity, and collaborative spirit. Winning the Maneuverability, Safety, and Best Appearance awards further highlights the team’s commitment to excellence in all facets of the design and build process.”

The Maneuverability Award recognizes the team’s exceptional engineering and design that allowed their quarter-scale tractor to navigate a challenging course with precision and control.

The Safety Award underscores the team’s meticulous attention to safety protocols throughout the
design, construction, and operation of their vehicle, a critical aspect in any engineering endeavor.
Finally, the Best Appearance Award acknowledges the team’s commitment to craftsmanship and
presentation, showcasing a well-designed and aesthetically pleasing machine.

Kody Habeck, Academic Staff in Biological Systems Engineering and co-advisor for the team,
added, ‘The team’s attention to detail throughout the design and fabrication process was truly
exceptional. From the precision fabrication to the meticulous wiring and hose routing, every
component reflected their dedication to craftsmanship, which undoubtedly contributed to their
success in multiple categories, especially the Best Appearance award.’”

maThe UW-Madison Badger Pulling Team is comprised of talented undergraduate students from
various academic disciplines, bringing together a diverse set of skills and perspectives. Their
strong showing at this competition demonstrates the high caliber of education and hands-on
experience offered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
