125 Years of Outdoor Adventure

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites everyone to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System in 2025. The year-long quasquicentennial celebration will include events, historical highlights, and opportunities to enjoy public lands across the state.

“More than 20 million people visit Wisconsin’s state parks and forests annually to experience the great outdoors,” said Steve Schmelzer, DNR Parks and Recreation Management director. “We’re thrilled to offer special experiences during this milestone year.”

Established in 1900 with the creation of Interstate Park, the Wisconsin State Park System has grown to over 307,000 acres. It now includes 50 state parks, 44 trails, 15 forests, 9 recreation areas, and 8 river and resource areas. For 125 years, the park system has demonstrated a commitment to natural resource stewardship and outdoor recreation.

“This celebration honors the park system’s impact on tourism and conservation while looking to the future,” said Diane Brusoe, DNR Fish, Wildlife and Parks division administrator. “We’re expanding public access and investing in long-term sustainability to serve Wisconsin’s people.”

Key Plans for the Next 125 Years

  • Enhance customer experiences with innovative programs, native species planting, and web-based tools like the online pass platform.
  • Maintain and improve public access and recreation facilities on DNR-managed lands.
  • Expand accessibility with adaptive recreation equipment, community partnerships, and beginner-friendly skill-building programs.

The DNR will host commemorative events throughout the year, supported by Friends Groups, volunteers, and community partners. Visitors can explore the DNR Events calendar or find volunteer opportunities on the DNR’s website.

New Opportunities for Visitors

Visitors can try activities like kayaking, canoeing, or bicycling using rental equipment available at many parks. This is ideal for beginners or those exploring new outdoor hobbies. Additionally, 2025 marks a change in vehicle admission passes: 12-month passes will be valid from the purchase date rather than expiring at year-end.

Camping and Reservations

With more than 6,000 campsites, the park system offers a range of experiences, including accessible sites and equestrian campgrounds. All campsites require reservations, and the DNR recommends booking early. The reservation system’s “notify me” feature can alert users when sites become available.
